Turbo Friendship top ten's for winter 2006

Matt Masters

Albums: These are probably my favourite albums of the year 2006. It feels like a weird list. There are two Wolf Parade side projects represented, a squeaky-voiced harp player, a Justin Timberlake record, perhaps more surprisingly an Emily Haines record, and my favourite record is mostly falsetto singing over floor toms run through FX pedals… How will these stand up over time? Should I be disconcerted that Junior Boys sometimes make me feel like I am in a Mitsubishi ad? Will Henderson and I look back at our Joanna Newsom phase and cringe? Time will tell, but at this point I think especially the top 5 records are damn good albums that I will enjoy for some time to come… (in reverse order)
10) Knives Don’t Have Your Back – Emily Haines and Soft Skeleton
9) Beast Moans – Swan Lake
8) Eraser – Thom Yorke
7) Shut Up I Am Dreaming – Sunset Rubdown
6) Future Sex/Love Sounds – Justin Timberlake
5) So This Is Goodbye – Junior Boys
4) Ys – Joanna Newsom
3) Silent Shout – The Knife
2) Ships – Danielson
1) Drum’s Not Dead – Liars
Songs: I think this was a pretty good year for pop, which is reflected in my current 10 favourite songs of 2006. I think I have cheated a little by including an unreleased song I heard played live this year, but whatever… Special thanks to Matt Henderson for introducing me to Peter, Bjorn, and John’s song “Young Folks”- of all the great things Henderson has ever done this kind act probably ranks somewhere in the middle third. Not bad… My number one song won hands down. I enjoy it. (in reverse order, again)
10) Stadiums and Shrines II – Sunset Rubdown
9) All Fires – Swan Lake
8) Young Folks – Peter, Bjorn, and John
7) Promiscuous – Nelly Furtado
6) Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
5) We Share Our Mothers’ Health – The Knife
4) My Love – Justin Timberlake
3) Videotape – Radiohead
2) Ship the Majestic Suffix – Danielson
1) In the Morning – Junior Boys

top ten albums i have overlooked in previous top tens... as far as i can remember. and in no particular order:
1) tomorrow the green grass - the jayhawks - the nards suck but it is a
beautiful record.

2) computerworld - kraftwerk - at first a bit of a utility player but now a
dependable veteran and clutch member of my cd roster.

3) niun niggung - mouse on mars - the 'arkanoid' of electronic records -
better still the 'arkanoid - revenge of doh' of electronic records.

4) marquee moon - television - it's good.
5) pink moon - nick drake - it's also good and also about moons.
6) chronic town - r.e.m. - the first, and quite possibly the best, r.e.m.
recording. my tape copy does not play properly from overuse.

7) waking life soundtrack - glover gill and the tosa tango orchestra - i
might receive some flak for choosing a movie soundtrack as a top ten - and
no less for the fact that it is all tango music but i can't deny the
pleasure it's given me over the past two or three years. and it's not as
though it's a compilation like most soundtrack albums, all but one song are
originals.

8) the best of - erik satie - hmmmm, might i receive more flak for choosing a
best of? mayhaps, but composers of this era did not release albums so what
am i to do? and it is still some of my favourite music. the gymnopédies and
gnossiennes are quite lovely.

9) bright flight - the silver jews - i regret not picking this for the
'spring 2006' top tens. i am trying to make ammends.

10) seamonsters - the wedding present - yeah, i've picked it before but it's a
motherfucker.

Best of 2006

The following are my favourite songs and albums of the past year. I feel that musically speaking the year was inconsistent at best; much like a Dears record (which is why they aren't on the list). As a result some of my choices feel forced. However, these lists show the sensitive side of Henderson probably more than any before. My goal was to be completely honest and as a result I found myself constantly battling two distinct urges: a) to make my choices were different from Masters, and b) to downplay the tender music (i.e. the sweeping harps of Joanna Newsom, the plaintive spirituality of Sufjan Stevens and the sappy synth-heavy sonnets of Justin Timberlake) and focus on more decidedly ruff tunes (i.e. Swan Lake, the Knife and Rhymefest, who says his dick could cause a 'damned eclipse,' which I believe despite a lack of any documented proof to support this claim). I feel I more or less succeeded and the results are two lists I feel more or less happy about, regardless of how similar they are to Poop's and whether or not they are labelled goode by the emotionally numb and sexually insecure members of this esteemed community.
